GNAM Week Universitas Indonesia 3rd Day, UNS Session

UNS session opened by MC at 20.25. Next, it continued with an opening remark from Mrs. Retno Tanding Suryandari, Ph. D., Head of Study Program Master of Management, Faculty of Economics & Business Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) at 20.28. thereafter, panel discussion with the speaker is Mr. Catur Sugiarto, Ph. D., a UNS lecturer moderated by Mr. Arviansyah, Ph. D., at 20.32 about digital transformation for sustainability: crafting a digital strategy to create a sustainable business.

Starting his presentation, he talked about business incubator has developed by UNS is UNS Innovation Hub which has a role in helping commercialization process of innovation by facilitating development of the new ideas, channeling creativity, and accelerating innovation with the main agenda of developing a start up ecosystem & commercialization/transfer technology for academic products, research, and innovation for UNS faculty. He gave examples incubated start-ups that developed under UNS business incubation program:

  1. SIAB Indonesia: a start-up engaged in a water management system that is able to overcome the problem of clean water, automatic water filtration using Internet of Things (IoT) technology
  2. SEMSO: a hardware & software device that is integrated that carries the concept of smart power metering & controlling which is able to control office or household electricity consumption using sensors on voltage currents
  3. Garsidjoeang: a start-up worth a business model for renting carts for daily trading using a shariah-based crowdfunding system
  4. Ekoelektrik Konversi Mandiri: provides conversion of fossil fuel-based vehicles into fully electric vehicles in approximately 6 hours process

The successful UNS business incubation program is evaluated by the following factors:

  1. Quantity: number of start-ups; coworking spaces; accelerators; and start-ups related meet-ups
  2. Quality: traction; presence of branches and R&D; branches of multinational companies; investment; number of employees; presence of unicorns; presence of global start-up influencers; and global start-up events
  3. Business environment: ease of doing business & registering companies; internet speeds; internet freedom; R&D investment; technological services; number of patents per capita; and level of English proficiency

Why UNS develop business incubation? Because of the urgency of digital transformation such as:

  1. 146% year-on-year growth in retail orders in North America
  2. More than 25% of consumers use mobile devices for purchase
  3. 22% growth in global venture capital investment in EdTech companies in the first quarter of 2020
  4. China’s online education market is expected to more than triple to US$ 99,3 billion in 2023 from 2019
  5. 160% expected increase in frequency of digital purchase
  6. 48% of employees will likely work remotely
  7. 20% expected annual growth in telemedicine through 2020 – 2024

He explained the impact of digital & technology like the following:

  1. Mining comes with high energy consumption and a high carbon cost, deforestation, landscape degradation, water pollution, gases
  2. Massive energy use & carbon footprint to create products, greenhouse effect by transportation worldwide
  3. Massive e-waste, throwing away $62,5 billion electronic waste every year
  4. Psychological impact (isolation depression, anxiety), physical health (eyestrain, poor posture, sleep problem)

After he ended the presentation, it continued to the Q&A session which opened for 2 terms. Enclosed at this event, UI gave an appreciation for UNS and we took picture together.
