GNAM Week Universitas Indonesia October 2023, 4rd Day Session

GNAM Week Universitas Indonesia October 2023, 4rd Day Session

On 4th day of GNAM, we started our activities with batik craft in the Batik Laweyan Solo workshop. For the first, all participants heard batik history and how batik was made by batik craftsmen directly, looked at their batik collection displayed, practiced batik craft, and at the least bought some batik for souvenirs.

The most interesting was this batik craft activity was the first experience for all participants, both local and overseas participants. They were very enjoy and excited to finish it. They draw batik patterns in a fabric using malam and chanting. Next, they were coloring and drying it naturally.

After that, we had lunch on the bus that traveled to 2 destinations, bus 1 went to PT Pan Brothers, Boyolali and bus 2 went to Umbul Ponggok, Klaten.

Group 1 arrived in PT Pan Brother at around 12.10. PT Pan Brothers is a company produces apparel for several biggest brands such as Adidas, Lulu Lemon, etc. We saw manufacturer’s design but we could not visit their plant because their customer came. They told us about the production process from raw materials until their finishing goods and continued we saw their apparel collection studio from the Adidas brand. They show the history of the company before using technology and nowadays which show significant changes after digital technology transformation was implemented. PT Pan Brothers is committed to retaining its employees even though the digital technology they use makes it easier and more efficient. Digital technology gives their company a competitive advantage and they are very aware that they must be superior to their competitors in order to become customers choices. Another thing that can be learned from PT Pan Brothers is that they are very aware of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Government) by complying with government regulations, being active in CSR programs, and implementing environmental protection. Besides that, they even plan to participate in the carbon exchange as planned by the government. Thereafter, it was a Q&A session in the meeting room, and we wrapped up the session with take picture together.

Group 2 arrived Umbul Ponggok at around 12.15. GNAM UI chose Umbul Ponggok for the destination company visit because they have become the best of village-owned enterprises (Badan Usaha Milik Desa). It has made these village-owned enterprises a learning center for others in Indonesia. Their presence can increase the output, income, and labor (multiplier effect) of the Umbul Ponggok villagers. It is proven by the presence of new businesses in the community. Furthermore, community participation was actualized through investments, which are a sign of the public’s trust in the village-owned enterprises. Learning from experience is one way to create sustainable village-owned enterprises.

The 2 groups met at the breccia cliff, Sleman to enjoy the beautiful natural views.

Next, we had dinner and continued by watching the Ramayana ballet performance in the Prambanan courtyard. This was very impressive because it was Indonesian culture, especially Javanese and made the participants very amazed, especially foreign participants who were new to it for the first time.
