Our History

The history of Universitas Indonesia can be traced back to the colonial period. In 1849, the Dutch colonial government laid the foundation of Universitas Indonesia today. In 1947, the geographically scattered tertiary educational institutions were merged into one umbrella university called Universiteit van Indonesië. In 1950, the university was renamed Universitas Indonesia and became a multi-campus state university. Hence, UI is considered the oldest university in Indonesia. Between 1954 and 1963, only faculties in Jakarta remained to be part of Universitas Indonesia. On September 18th, 1950, the Department of Socioeconomics of the Faculty of Law was detached. It became the Faculty of Economics. The Master of Management FEB UI, known as Magister Manajemen Universitas Indonesia (MMUI), was officially established on October 8th, 1988.
